Change bulb in Hella Quads
« on: 09 June 2009, 13:19 »
As you can see, I need a new bulb!

But with the Hella Quads, will I need to remove the entire light fitting from the car in order to change the bulb? Because as you can see..

..there is almost zero room behind the bulb casing unit, to be able to change the bulb without removing the entire hella quad unit. Am I wrong or right here?

So if I need to remove the entire light fitting, I am also going to have to remove the front grille of the car, correct?

If anyone can help, that would be great. Thanks

You're right there mate, there's very little room to change the bulb so you'd be best removing either the headlight (pop the grill off, and then undo the 4 bolts securing the headlight to the slam panel) or you could remove the air filter box.

I didn't have to do either when I had them on my Golf because the air filter box is on top of the engine on the 1.4/1.6 so there's more room in that corner

I reckon you may be able to do it without removing anything but it may be a bit fiddly..

Thanks mate. Is it easier to remove the headlight and grill, or the air filter box?

Call me stupid, but how do you pop the grill off?! I dont want to snap any plastic etc!

Quicker to pop the grill off and remove the headlight, the airbox will take longer.

Yes the top part, still looks like you will need to remove the lower part from photo to get the bulb out, I would still remove the light.

Can you explain how that is done please, cheers.

Also, how does one remove the front grill? Sorry, I am quite useless with cars.

I'd have said it was easier to remove the air filter box because if I remember correctly, on my VR6 it's one clip to remove the pipe that goes to your throttle body, and a couple of rubber o-ring type things which hold the airbox down.. like Khare said, it wouldn't take long at all.. probably about 30 seconds if you know what you're doing, or a minute or two if you're absolutely clueless lol.

Removing the grill and headlight would take longer and requires more effort and tools etc. There's 4 clips along the top of the grill (with the bonnet open) and two main clips at the bottom of the grill (one located under the passenger headlight and one located under the driver headlight)

its a 2 minute job taking the grill off and taking out the light, and i would say that was probably easier. The only problem is you may break a clip if there brittle and not easily moved, but is straight forward.

Removing the airbox would mean uncliping the pipe that goes to the throttle body, theres a couple of sensors i think also and may be more technical for someone that doesnt know much about cars, and then strugle to put it back!, and then your still going to be leaning into the bay to get at the bulb!
