I agree with what others have said the MFD2 does work well with the antenna in the dash. Mine was magnetic and just sat on the steel beam (no idea what its called) behind the upper vent so there was no visible difference from the inside. With the antenna there I never had an issue with reception. I have the same set up you describe and when I plugged the MFD2 in it worked with the highline and MFSW straight away. I think the sound is better from the MFD2 when compared to the RCD i had before.

It wasn't all good though as after I fitted the MFD2 I found that it drained the battery if the car was left standing for a week or so. I have no idea why this was happening but is was annoying enough to make me remove it (and I haven't had a dead battery since). Of course when I took it to VW they didn't want to know as it wasn't the original unit in the car and wanted £90 just to plug in the VAG com. I'm guessing I would never have noticed the battery drain if I drove the car daily.

I don't know if anyone else has had these problems but I never found a solution to the battery drain.

So after plugging it in it gave you the nav screen on the highline and displayed arrows etc?

That's weird about the battery. I wonder if something in the nav unit was taking a permanent live feed and draining it?

After fitting it, did you get someone to code it in using a vag com?

Would be interested to hear if anyone else has had the battery drain issue.

Yea almost. When i installed the unit the MFSW just worked without doing anything. To get the arrows up ont he highline i had to play around with the settings on the MFD2 unit and the highline until eventually after several hours of fiddling the arrows appeared. I have no idea what i did though as in the end I was just mashing buttons until it worked.

I think i have since seen a guide on one of the vw auido forums but can't remember where.

No worries. I found out the hard away about the CD playback. I borrowed a Touran with nav but it didn't have a cd changer so I had to choose between nav+radio or cd+getting lost.

Luckily I have the ipod dock in the armrest of my golf, so it sounds like it will work without any fiddling about.

Now to hunt down an MFD2 on ebay........

I'm possibly replacing my MFD2 for the RNS510... let me know how you get on with your search, we could possibly do a deal ;)
