Topping up oil - added too much?
« on: 08 June 2009, 08:00 »
I just sent the gf off in my GTI in a bit of a rush and checked the oil before she went. It was almost at the bottom of the marker, so I topped up. But in my rush must have added too much as it now went past the middle bit into the separated off top bit, which you're not meant to go into!

Will the car run fine like this? I don't think I'll have gone too far over the top bit, as I only had half of a 1ltr bottle left and left a little in the bottle too.

From the bottom of the hatched area to the top is 1L of oil so if it was at the bottom of this and you put in half a litre then you're fine

OK, I'm an idiot. I've just done the same thing again! But this time when I've checked the dip stick about 20mins after topping up, it goes right up to the maximum part and past it. E.g. for the inch or two of metal at the end of the dipstick, it goes past the maximum mark up to where the metal stops and the stick begins.

Will it be OK to drive like this? Am meant to be leaving on a trip tonight! :/

Hmm found this on another forum:

Quote
The crank is about two inches above the oil level when the engine is off (Measured on the ALH engine). I figure that you could put in about 7 quarts of oil give or take before the crank will make contact with the oil. Once the engine is running you will suspend about 1 quart up in the motor so with that in mind you could possibly over fill by as much as 4 quarts without damage to the motor.

This is obviously NEVER recomended, However if you are 1/2" to 1" above the fill line I would lecture the dealer but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it nor would I drain it.
