possible golf gti problems
« on: 07 June 2009, 17:20 »
Hi my name is jason and ive been offered a 'T' reg MK IV golf gti for £2200
I was just wondering if there is any common problems that i should look out for before i purchase it.
its a 3 door, dark blue colour with an induction kit, tinted rear lights and has just had a new MOT and only needed a new rear brake disc.
a few cosmetic blemishes but other than that it looks fine to me.
hopefully somebody can advise me if this is any good and if i should check anything else out before i get it.
Apologies if this is in the wrong section.
jason

check the idle'ing on it.. as when i was buying mine i found a few with rough idling which = future problems! .. also when you take the car for a good drive check that the turbo is kicking in at the right time which is at 2500 rpm (someone can confirm this not 100% on it).. also check that there aint no flat spots through the rev range .. and if an induction kit has been put inask if the MAF has been changed or any problems have incured with it as that seems to be a common problem.. if you can get a VAG COM and plug it in thats a bonus it will give u fault codes of what problems are on the car if any! but not every problem will throw up fault codes so keep that in mind. hope this helps   :nerd::smiley:

Sounds reasonable money I guess.  What's the mileage?  Can you afford an inspection or HPi check for peace of mind?  Spend a minute to go through the service history (has it been looked after?).  Also how many prev owners?

Take a peek in the common problems thread on here, and be mindful of such things as:
Does it have a sun-roof?  I believe these can often leak.
Weak clutch pedal welds.
Have rear bushes been replaced?
If it is a Turbo (?), has the clutch/flywheel ever been done?  I'm currently saving up to get mine replaced.
Cam-belt AND WATER PUMP done at correct mileage interval?
Dodgy coil packs are also part and parcel with these motors.
Take a look under the car at general condition, also condition of the rubber CV gaitors (this already bit me on the arse).

Not to put you off of course!

I had my heart set on one of these and am taking the rough with the smooth.  It's a beauty to drive and like any car as long as you look after it, it will look after you.....

Build thread clicky

86000 miles
not sure bout the owners and FSH
yup got a sunroof seal looked ok on it will need to check that.
'saving up' for a clutch flywheel replacement, are they expensive?
what are general performance parts to buy like for them?

best to check the owners and the service history mate... i would advise to use the £3 phone check even or a full HPI check to make sure it aint a damage repair or anything mate  ... as for the clutch the g60 flywheel and vr6 clutch is recomended on this forum. not sure on the prices have a look at search button im sure thread somewhere about it.
