I dont think they are that slow, but they are not exactly amazingly quick.

Might benifit from a service, and it might not of been looked after in the past to be honest.

So it doesn't rev past 4k? Something could be wrong.

service - plugs, oil, filters, etc.

what year is it? cause the AEX (96 on) was quicker than the older 1.4 model (ABD i thnk).

think the ABD is single point but the AEX is multi point.

i do remember reading why they wont rev past 4k, but cant remember that it was that caused it......

i've got a powerflow catback system if you want a bit more poke.... check in the classifieds ;)

Dont expect it to be the same as the 1.8 Astra, they are 16v engines for a start,   but the 1.4L still has a fair bit of poke for what it is.

The AE series engines limit at 5,500 rpm as standard i think so where the gti in limp mode will limit at 5000,  the 1.4 will limit at 4000 so its a classic case of limp mode by the looks of it.   It sounds to me like the timing is out,  would explain a lot

SE's were special edition and only made in 1996 iirc

So will definately be AEX
