I'm glad. The failings cited in their testdrive are of no concern to me - a reasonably powerful and by all accounts quiet and comfortable hatchback is exactly what I was looking for.

its not bad at all, agree with ^ i supose its disapointing if you are into hardcore hot hatches like r26 and rs focus but if you was into those its more than likely you wouldnt be driving a mk5 gti

It's not going to please everyone.

I do find it strange though that every other review I have read had only good things to say, yet this is the first that has not.

GTI mk6, 3dr Manual (Yes Manual! If I wanted a Taxi I'd hail one, not spend £1500 on one), Candy White, Full Leather, Xenons, ACC, 18", RCD510 + Dynaudio, DAB Radio, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Fiscon Bluetooth Plus, Golf R LED's.

All the test reports I have read (probably about 15 now, if I include those in English and French) say more or less the same:

GOOD POINTS
- quiet
- comfortable (with ACC)
- powerful enough
- very well built interior
- roomy
- DSG nice, but not perfect
- good fuel economy, residuals, etc.

BAD POINTS:
- could do with an extra 50hp
- looks a bit bland
- expensive

I had basically sussed all this out when I signed the order form on May 1 and, tbh, the bad points are of no concern to me. If I had wanted a hard-core hot hatch, I would have bought the Focus RS and saved myself a 3 1/2 month wait :)

Dude I am with you here, it will be a great car, and no doubt many of the mk5 folks will end up with one (hopefully me at some point as well)
cheers

I kind of agree with the review.
I bought an ED30 because it was still a fast hot hatch - but I didn't want it to be like my previous Integra Type R DC5... which was built like a go-kart where you feel every bump and fight for power!
Its more like a refined car where you can drive every day in comfort and silence - but still have fun if you want to.
My test drive of the MK6 GTI was a similar experience to my ED30 - apart from it did fell that bit more refined and dull.

If you want that go-kart feel then buy a Focus RS or a Megane.  If you want the comfort and luxury, then get a VW!
Golf R... 3 door, DSG, Leather, Reflex Silver, Black 19" Talladega Wheels, ACC, Parking Sensors, RNS510 with Dynaudio, Reverse Camera, Luxury Pack, Cruise Control & Fiscon Bluetooth.

Have you read this weeks Autocar which has a comprehensive test, which is similar in places? One of the issues now appears to be how to define a hot hatch. We have the raw R26R and the Focus RS at one end and then the civilised GTI. Maybe we need a new category for cars like the GTI as I do wonder if it really should be classed at a hot hatch now - not that thats a bad thing as VW seem to be targeting people that want a quiet, comfortable and reasonably quick car with the GTI. For those after a better driving experience they will have the R version?

Whats 50hp? Can be acheived with £500quids worth of mods. The comfort and cabin quality carn't be modified cheaply. And you can be sure that the current mk6 GTI will be more modable then the R20 version.
Seriously though if your looking for 300hp you'de just buy an FQ300 and be done with all hatchbacks. As nothing standard will catch that.
