Ipod Integration Question
« on: 06 June 2009, 16:31 »
Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, I did do a search but could not find a definitive answer.

I currently have a MK5 Gti with the rcd300 with factory ipod prep. Quite happy with it apart from the obvious that no album, artist or folder information is displayed. My question, if I upgrade to the touchscreen rcd510 or the newer rcd310 as fitted in the mk6, will they display track and artist info without modification or will further fernagling still be required?

Any experiences or thoughts much appreciated.

simple answer, no it wont display track info on RNS 510, but if you had one, you would just transfer everything to the internal hard drive to get track info.

i think he is on about the RCD 510 not the sat-nav/hard-drive RNS 510. The RCD 510 will display track info etc but u need the MDI interface cable. can get it from vw or sometimes on ebay

either way, RCD or RNS, the answer is still no with standard VW ipod prep.

that MDI thing is like £200+, waste of money

The IPOD integration is one of the poorest design parts of the MKV Golf. Avoid if you can is my best answer.

Hurdy,
Would you just reccomend getting an aftermarket stereo then? I would like to get one, but don't like having to keep taking the fascia off when I get out of the car.

If you really want full IPOD integration and full speed control of it, then an aftermarket head unit is the only way to go. Mine is a double din Kenwood and the Ipod integration is superb and even does video from the Ipod source. If you look around you can get double din units for under £400 new if you don't need sat nav. A double din unit looks better in the car too as it doesn't stand out as much as a single din tends to.

Hurdy, outta interest what Double Din Fascia did you decide to go with?  i've got a Single Din fascia thats OEM on its way, but is there a VAG Double Din one?  I've had my eyes on an Alpine Double Din as well ya see...what Kenwood is it and did you upgrade the standard speakers or just retain them and fit the sub in the boot?  ie. is the aftermarket unit enough power to make something decent of the standard door speakers?
