Hi Guys

Driving home this morning from the airport and saw some open road so I thought..... why not!

So in 6th gear i put my foot down and watched the speedometer soar... but i got to 125 i heard a loud POP! from the engine and a sound that i can only describe as air being expelled at high pressure then followed by a clanking/ flapping sound from the passenger side of the engine. Naturally i slowed right down and when i driving at about 40 the noise stopped. How strange.

Just to see if it had gone completely i put my foot down in 3rd gear but as soon as it hit 3500rpm the flapping / mild clanking sound happened again. So in the end just drove it conservatively for the remaining 10 miles.

No loss of power so any ideas???

I don't know what's wrong but could you have driven over something?

btw the boys in blue may be looking at this and technically you have admitted to breaking the law.
Without traction power is nothing!

What i meant to say was 125kph...... apologies for my mistake...

Nah dont think its as simple as driving over something as the noise is definately coming from the engine at a certain amount of revs....

How do you know he's telling the truth though

Sounds like you may have popped a pipe off the induction pipework or something although i'm not overly familiar with the engine. Failing that maybe the diverter valve has died?

^^ My first thoughts as well.  Pipework or tbh more likely the DV.

Ok  that is crazy!!!

Cheers for the heads up though.

Going to go an inspect the pipework in a minute.... if it is the diverter valve is it a big/ expensive job?

Another possibility is it could be the turbo went into overboost, the engine makes some really strange noises (boost is cut off and the dv opens) but it should clear when the ignition is switched off.

Loyal owner since 2005, done with remapping, I drive a Golf not a Veyron. (hypocrite)

Divertor valve from VW is about £30 ish.  Unfortunatly on the mk5 GTi (non ED30's) its at teh back of the engine bolted onto the turbo itself which makes it a bit of a PITA job to replace.  You need to get at it from under the car.  Earlier versions of these are famous for failing on standard cars let alone remapped cars.  A popular mod is to replace the OEM part with a Forge divertor valve - have a look at their website as I'm sure there are instructions on how to change it.  Failing that have a google - bound to be a guide out there somewhere.  By all account the latest revision of the divertor valve from VW is supposed to be solid and a fraction of the price of the Forge item.

Any decent indy should be able to do it for no more than 30-45mins labour plus the cost of the valve
