Retro fitting optional extras

 As you know i'm still looking for the right car. Seen some very well priced basic spec GTI's and was toying with the idea of retrofitting the extras I want. Would have £2.5k to spend on extras! Anyone know what is involved in the following options.

Auto lights and wipers

Sat nav (would presume just plug and play)

electric folding mirrors

Any others anyone else can recommend!?

xenons has been touched on a little while back, but has anyone ever done it?

Could probably get a few of these done along with a new set of wheels and the bumpers colour coded..

I'm pretty sure all mk5 GTI's (UK spec anyway) came with the auto lights/wipers.

Sat nav is a piece of pee (did it myself at the weekend)

If your car has the winter pack (with headlight washers) then retrofitting xenons is doable as I'm sure there is a recent post where you can get a kit for the auto levellers.  If you don't have the washers Its a complete nightmare to do and not worth doing.

The folding mirrors would also be a nightmare and IMO not worth the hassle - they don't fold that much anyway.

Retrofitting a MFSW is doable should you be inclined and so is the highline display but depending on the year of your car this is either a relatively straightforward swap if you have the correct diagnostic software or a complete PITA.

Can't quite tell if the car has headlight washers, although i am aware they are a must for xenons. Where are the heated seat switches on the dash, maybe I could spot them in the pictures!   


How much for satnav then?

Folding mirrors are a waste of time then... fair enough!!

Maybe just the 6cd armrest changer i'd be interested in.. nothing else is essentially worth doing

I paid £320ish for a MFD2 DVD sat nav.  Its no where near as fancy as the latest touch screen RNS 510 but thats £800 ish.  All prices from Ebay.

To be honest a tom tom is a better sat nav unit than the MFD2 but I wanted one that was built in/OEM looking without spending a fortune.  With the MFD2 you need a 6 disc changer or ipod dock as the unit needs the dvd slot for the nav disk....  IMO its a relatively cheap / easy upgrade that is plenty functional for my needs and really improves the look of the dash.  Sound quality is an improvement over the RCD300 it replaced to boot.  If your into your audio though there are better option out there...

Heated seat swiches are beside the displays for the climate control

Auto lights and wipers are standard. you can see if you have the headlight washer jets, they have a section that fits into the bumpstrip.
Centre armrest is a gooodie!, with the rear cup holders.

It has heated seats and a sunroof! I am pretty sure it has headlight washers too so I would guess it has the winter pack?

Folding mirrors have been discussed on mk5golfgti.co.uk so it is possible to retro fit but i doubt it's worth it in the long run.

Hopefully going to see it tomorrow, which is good as it hasn't been advertised yet so may get a look in on this one (touches wood)

Not sure what the sunroof spec intails, but I dont have the winter pack but have the heated seats, as it came standard.

Ah didn't realise the heated seats were standard in the earlier ones (2005). I think the sunroof is a standalone extra i;e not part of a 'pack'

Heated seats were standard with leather all the way through.  Only came with cloth as part of the winter pack.

Well went to see a NAIL today. 5 hour round trip for feck all. Seriously how anyone can try and sell a car in that condition is beyond me regardless of price. Spoke to the bloke on the phone yesterday, e said there was a small dent in the door which needed looking at other than that great condition inside and out.

Got there this morning to find:

Numerous serious dent's around the body work, hadn't even been washed, crisp's and sh!te all over the interior, no sunroof at all! One tyre was slick on the outside, the other had a bulge in the sidewall so was unsafe to drive home. Crap everywhere , tennis ball's and cd's scattered about. Looks like someone tried to break in by prizing the glass with a screwdriver, all the rubber was fooked and paint off down too bare metal.

He said the cambelt was done but it wasn't.. Needless to say I was there for about 3 min's before telling him it's a heap and started the drive back.


Proably cost me about £60 to view a pile which i'm obviously not to happy about. Why can't people just be honest rather than waste everyone's time. I''ve got a buyer lined up for my car, and knowing they are travelling a distance I sent them pictures of all the imperfections so they didn't turn up and find anything they weren't expecting, surely thats just common curtosy (sp.)  I mean lying about it isn't going to make me buy the car any more is it?


In short i'm fecked right off!!
