Buying a VR6

Hi Folks not been here for a while after I sold my Valver (which I've missed!), Been running around in  Rover 25 1.4i and I hate it!!

So looking into getting back behind th wheel of a Golf :smiley: :smiley:
I don't have the time/money to maintain an Mk2 and Mk4s are still a bit pricey, so the VR6 looks like it fits the bill.

It looks like you can get a low miler (80kish) for about £2.
But I have NO IDEA what I'm looking for in a VR6.

What are the like to own/run/maintain? How reliable are they? It will be used daily and needs to run faultlessly, most of the time!

rowlers welcome back mate,gutted i didnt have the cash to buy your mk2,go for the 16v,not a great difference between a valver or vr really

I had a k plate vr6 about 2years ago with 130 on the clock it ran sweet with min problems with a mpg of about 35 crusing and about 25mpg chewing up little boys thinking they was faster.
To be honest i wish i never got rid but had to at the time, at the mo looking for another, just make sure they have some service history with it then you know its been looked after .

Main issues with a VR6 are fuel costs and chain problems.

Not fussed about fuel costs, don't do that many miles for it to be a major issue. Whats the crack with the chains? when do they need replaced and is it a big job?

Whats the issue with the head gaskets? Are they weak or is that the early ones?
 
What I don't want is a car that needs constant attention, like the Mk2, which wasn't costly, but required contstant tinkering!

How about a 98k R plate for £1300, does that sound decent?

just found out that one didnt have any history :sad:

Still looking - found another one which sounds a belter at £1700, but I don't know the milage yet - wating for a reply.

There is a local one owned by the same family for the last 10 year. it has 85k on it, on a P Reg, but he wants £2500 for it which I think is a bit steep - got him down from £3k too!

Decisions decisions!

hmmm all depends on how well its looked after, price is abit hefty like but if u want a good one then u pay for it  :wink:
