Buying a Mk2 GTI
« on: 16 August 2004, 15:07 »
Hi Guys,

I've been looking at Golf GTi's recently, and I think I've found the one I want.

It's a 1991 H Reg, 3dr Mk2 Golf GTi, Red, BBS rims, 116,000miles, MOT til May 05, Tac 'til Oct 04, Service history to 90,000.  ?935.  Been to see it today, drove it, powersteering is a bit whiney, accelerator is heavy (but I'm used to a 96 clio).  All seemed ok, no rust, rearwheel well looked in good nick...

How does it sound??

sounds very good indeed

power steering is whiney anyhow!

id check in around the fuel flap, rear of the tailgate etc for rust, thats the normal places they rust - also check in under the rear window seals

HPI check it before you buy it, just to be sure you know all its history

accelerator cable is easily/cheapily replaced

there is a good buyers guide here:-

Check the rear calipers out throughly - these are more than likely gonna be your first large bill, so anything other than 100% and use it as a good haggling point ;)

If you're not sure what the hell I'm talking about, search the site as it's a common topic ...

?800 cash now !!!! let them smell the money  ;D

Gambit's right about the power steering, always a bit whiney...

get yourself a test drive and do a few full steering lock circles in the car park, listen for knocking from the driveshafts / Cv joints.

And always go armed with a bit less than the price in cash...people go weak when they see a  wad of moolah....
