I have checked the cable it seems fine, It was adjusted during last service two weeks ago. the cable seems to be in it place, it seems like something from the pedal connecting to the cable.

just a thought, on my mk2 the accellerator pedal came out of its fixings, and was inoperable.

aa man fixed it by using a cable tie to stop it coming out again.....

Mine did this once when my g/f borrowed my car.  Just dropped flat to the floor.

She had it towed home.   I just yanked the pedal up and it seemed to reset itself.  Never had a problem since ? that was 18 months ago - have you tried pulling the pedal back up or is it totally ?floppy?!

If that doesn?t work it must be either:

-   broken cable (but you have checked this)(
-   dodgy self adjusting mechanism (maybe it?s just sticky) not taking up the slack.  I reckon my self adjuster let a load of slack out (fault?) and then managed to reset itself when I fiddled with the pedal.  Might be worth removing the rubber cover over the end of the clutch cable (in the engine bay) and squirting a load of WD40 in it.  I believe the self adjusting cables on Mk3 Golfs are renowned for causing probs like this.

I?m no expert but the one thing I?ve always hated about by Mk3 is the clutch ? it?s always been creaky / lumpy. In the last three years it?s never been right ? cable snapped on one occasion, and as I mentioned above it has dropped to the floor too.  I took it to a good clutch specialist (NOT Mr Clutch!) and he reckoned the clutch itself was OK, but getting on a bit.  His suggestion was to replace the lot, but I haven?t bothered and it?s got no worse really.  I?ve just kinda got used to it.   When I drive my g/f?s Polo (52 reg) it?s so nice though ? smooth and light.   Oh well.
