Mk3 colour concept gti gearbox question.
« on: 03 June 2009, 13:23 »
Hello everyone, i'm new to this forum and this will be my very first post :)

I've done a few searches on the forum to try and find the answer first but haven't found any.

I've just bought a mk3 (N reg) 2.0 8v gti (engine code AGG) which needs a replacement gearbox. The problem is, the engine has had a bit of work done to it i,e- Stage 2 head (ported and polished), Kent cams, modified ecu, 57i induction kit, cat back exhaust.

Now whilst i think all of these are brill , I can see why the original gearbox is broke. I don't imagine it would've been designed for the power the car's now putting out (approx 160bhp)

Can anyone advise of a suitable gearbox to replace it?

I don't think yours is running 160bhp, a standard gearbox will be fine, you cannot fit a 16v one unless you convert to hydraulic clutch.

Thanks for your reply, is that hard to do the hydrolic conversion?

What would you think it would be putting out (bhp)

as wayne said just replace it with another 020 gearbox (this may help http://boneybradley.webs.com/thegearboxes.htm)

Not sure, it is 115 standard, I cannot see you adding 45bhp even with all that work, a standard gearbox will be fine, they are not the strongest but I would think it failed due to age / miles.

most power vag ever put thru the 020 is 136bhp from the 2.0 16v 9a US spec MK2.  I'd imagine it would be closer to 136 than 160 ;)
