Gearbox oil leak from speedo hole
« on: 02 June 2009, 20:49 »
Hi all. I topped up my gearbox oil a couple of weeks back (took 1.5 litre) but now when the car is hot I've noticed the distinctive smell of gearbox oil and the only place I can see a small weep of clean oil is where the speedo cable goes into the top of the box, there's nothing coming from around the output flanges or anywhere else. Is there a seal around this I can replace? Thanks.

There should be a rubber seal between the cable and gearbox

be extra carefull pulling cable from box, wiggle it gently as you pull it shouldnt take any force. if you pull to hard you risk dropping the speedo gear inside the box!

That's what worries me as I've heard of so many people loosing the speedo drive.  :undecided:

its held on pretty securely, only time it will fall off is if you catch the gear on the hole then yank the cable, or if someone managed to fit it without the circlip on in the past :)
