Suspension problem *advice needed*
« on: 01 June 2009, 18:54 »
Basically the past few months my car had been knocking at front when pulling away. on inspection it was because the passenger side front shock top mount was knackered. Soooo as i want to keep on top of the car and with big shows and mileage coming up i thought ild treat the car to a new shock top mount.

Didnt have time and great knowledge so ended up paying garage to do it. £40

Now picked up car... and im majorly dissapointed. Scrub scrub scrub on that side of the tyre to arch.

Now i thought this was weird as coilover level had not been changed and was always fine before. (i couldnt even put half lock on it was that bad)

Ended up getting home and moving coilover level up on that side... 10mm. 20mm 30mm up. ended up 40mm higher than the coilover level before and now ok. But bit baffled why ive needed to raise it so much higher??

And now another problem. theres lack of camber on that side. and looks complety odd against the cambered other sides. looks rubbish. how can this be changed????

help and advice greatly welcomed. please help.

standard top mounts i would believe. sorry.

(pics with car jacked up)

and the garage have put that sleeve on which wernt on before and nor either on 3other corners  :undecided:

Guessing ill need to change the other front side for it to even out? just well confused why

1) that side as needed to be adjusted 40mm higher
2) lack of camber compared to other 3cambers

the camber is the problem i think here

if you have only fitted one then the other one is sagging or they have fitted the wrong one

if the spacer is fitted wrong then the height will be all over and it probably drives like a dog

because they havn't done the alignment , get that done sharpish

Yeah... suns got to me. not thinking. and i only changed that side as it was only knocking from that side. and presumed other side would be fine.

So basically ive had to adjust the height because changing that side top mount as reduced the front camber. hence making it scrub more.

So therefore change the other driver side shock top mount? so it matches passenger side... and then have the alignment done? cheers, appreciated.

there is 2 bolts on the botton of the shock that bolts to the hub

this is the way of adjusting the camber

they are at the bottom of the shock on this picture

you need the alignment checking mate :)

after they have sorted there mess out and you fit another top mount to the other side

So your saying its there fault as they should of automatically sorted the alignment after adding the new top mount? saying that they should of said the other side would of needed doing.

So new top mount on driver side. Wheel alignment checked and then adjust the camber so its more positive. and therefore able to go lower on my 8j's! excellent!

exactly, whenever you have the suspension off for swappin bits/raising/lowering you should always get camber & trackin rechecked :)
