It is scaremongering. I really do believe that.
I had my Fiesta Zetec S, which was 9 years old, and had covered 70k miles.
Ford recommend a cam belt change at 100k miles, or 10 years, so I was only just getting round to thinking about doing it in another year or so - even then I was told the condition was OK, with only a few minor cracks, nothing to worry about!

I dont see why VW would be so different?

As I said, I'll do it at 60k, or 4 years - whichever I get to first.
In all honesty I will probably get to 4 years first, so will get it done then along with the DSG service.

Ok its 4 months shy of 4 years, but it saves another day without a car.

I used to work for one of the big parts companies and I'd sell a lot of cambelt kits with valves and head gaskets.  As a curious chap, I would ask what mileage the cars had done.  The lowest was a CityRover...14k!   Most of the VWs were around 90-120k but there were still a few between 40-60k!

The one that makes me laugh is Vauxhall, the 1st Vectra had a 100k change interval, but most spat the belts off at 30k!

VW Customer Services state 4 years or....now thats where the fun begins.....

Arnold Clark Main Dealer = 40,000
Indy 1 = 85,000
Indy 2 = 120,000

VW Customer Services = ? well it seems it depends who you talk to...I got a girl, who contacted her technical services department whilst I was on the phone and (think I posted this earlier, cant be arsed verifying it) stated 120,000

No idea where this 40k rumour came in...I asked if there was a published technical bulletin advising.

I think its a main dealer scam to get more money through their greasy slimey doors. 

I think we had a rather lengthy debate here about it and someone suggested that this was actually a VW UK policy ONLY....well not according to my call to Customer Services its not, its 4 years or 120,000.

I for one just want them all to agree what it should be in terms of mileage...ffs...

Its near enough 4 years, so I am getting mine done today. Job done.

All 4th year costs paid for, just sept tax and motor to look forward to......Christ ! Why do we do this? There's the citroen c1 after all....lol

VW and car manufacturer's in general have to be very careful in chosing when to recomend service intervals and other work doing.

There was a court case about a cambelt issue on an A4 1.8T engine. The VAG group were taken to court by an individual whose cambelt had snapped before the recomended interval had come around. The problem was found to affect all models of a certain age.

The classic one is how often they suggest brake fluid to be changed. My handbook states 2 years! Which is incredible IMO. The car I sold before getting the golf was a 2000 and that had never had its fluid changed. But because one individual somewhere on the planet had a problem VW states 2 years, also helps with bringing in the service penny's!

It's not just VW who say every 2 years for brake fluid, I think its most manufacturers now. Brake fluid absorbs water over time (hygroscopic) so its in their best interests to maintain these systems properly.
