water pump help

can anyone help me out here i have a m reg 8v gti and i think the water pump has gone should it spin freely when no belt on as mine is quite stiff had to check it was something to do with that as my car started making funny noises so i took both belts off and tried find the problem that way as i thought it was the power steering pump and also would it be safe to drive it about 20 miles to get it repaired at my work
any help would be highly appreciated

I think it should be fairly tight, most pumps ive come across are. If its free its knackered.

Also i would check behind the cam belt covers for any noises.

thanks will do but it only made the strange noise when that belt was on with no belt the noise had gone

dont drive it with the waterpump belt off whatever ya do. The noise is the pump bearings. A new pump needed.
