So, got my Mk2 Gti this morning and don't know too much about water pumpers... the guy I got it off said the garage managed to snap the heater matrix off and had to bypass it...

I know I dont need heat this time of year... well, maybe, but I would like to get the heates working... there is some rubber water hose still there (leading to the heater blower) with a jubilee clip on it... but it has been bypassed, maybe they snapped the other end...

I understand its a pain in the proverbial to get to it to replace.... any thoughts, comments etc greatly appreciated....

Anyone know how much a garage would/should charge to do it if the metal pipe was snapped...??

Cheers

Steve.

there is a guild of how to replace the heater matrix on here and they say it should take about 3hrs so in a garge it would probably be between £150-£200.if you do a search you will find it hope this helps

Replacing the heater matrix is not a difficult job, but it's not a quick job either. It's just a pain in the arse, and you need time and patience, as most of the dashboard needs to come out or moved. The haynes book of words explains it step by step. Don't forget to drain the water system first and disconnect the battery.

Cheers mate, as new to watercooled, thought I might save up the pennies and get a garage to do it towards the end of the summer... or... if I can get enough info before then, give it a go myself.... I do need a Haynes manual... will get one soon.

Thanks for the advice

You don't need to completely drain the water system. You can just free off the hoses from the matrix and let it drain - then at least you can salvage something.

Removing the matrix is easy - just time consuming. Tonnes of guides on here, plenty to choose from.

+1 to all of the above,

but

1,  REMOVE ya front seats first, frees up a lot more space for getting up under the dash.

2, flush and clean ya NEW matrix off, they SMELL

all in took me 2 hours
