crankshaft pully wobble?
« on: 30 May 2009, 18:03 »
I did the fan belt today, and realised that the cambelt cover was rubbing on the bottom crank/fanbelt pully, so i took the allen key bolts out (with much hassle) and took the cover off. Tried to order a new one, along with some new m8 x 37mm hex/allen key type bolts, but no vw dealers were open. so i put it all back together just so i can go pick up the parts on monday.
Get it all back together, fitting a new cambelt tensioner too (long story)...
Start it up, and notice that the pully doesent spin centrally and wobbles. Would this be the crank bearings? ive uploaded a video below.

Crank end bearings mean engine out? im still considering an abf conversion...

Thats not going to be crank bearings mate. have you checked that the pully is sat down flat. i think that the pullys on these cars have a rubber jouint/damper built into them and if some one has leavered it off some times this can make them wobble. i hope this helps

The crank pulley should only go on one way, it has a dimple in the back which stops it from sitting right and the bolts are not equally spaced either - so its hard to get it on wrong.

Just pull it off and line it up and put it back on.

If it was the crank bearings then there is no way in hell it would wobble that much - the engine wouldn't even run.

Ahh cheers! i was a bit worried about it. il whip it off tomorrow, and sort it. i took it off, and just put it back on without looking. its weird, from the top it looks inline and doesent wobble from side to side i dont think.

So i took it off, the locator nipple was seated in what looked liek the right hole... i looked at the 4 holes, and one was elongated so i seated it in that. it works fine now. very strange.
My tensioner still makes a whineing sound for some reason, but only when the belt is tensioned correctly. have greased it up with no change. any ideas on that one?

Did you put a new cambelt on as well as the tensioner?

The whining noise may be due to an overtightened belt...  :undecided:

Yeah, thats what i thought, but its not over tightened, its the correct tension. if i slacken it any more the belt vibrates and moves around when revved.
