Getting HOT !!
« on: 23 May 2009, 16:22 »
Bit worried about my 8v J plate Golf , Not all the time , say every third or fourth trip out the temp light will flash on and off . The gauge is reading below halfway so dont think anything is cooking although it does seem pretty hot in the bay , Any feedback grateful as i am no mechanic , Cheers Graeme

What does the oil temp read?

A flashing temp light can also mean the coolant is low so best check this first.

I didn't think the light flashing has owt to do with temperature - its the coolant level sensor in the lid of the expansion tank.

So would a new sensor be the way to fix it then Ben ???

Do a quick search - you can easily diagnose it by removing the plug, checking the dash, bridging the pins, then checking the dash.

the light is also temperature warning, which is why cars fitted without a level sensor still have one :)
can test it yasen, bridge pins on the coolant sensor/earth it and gauge shoots to max and light goes off.  had a weird fault on my mates temp sensor, the light would come on but temp readiong was normal, replaced the sensor and it was fixed! dunno what happened there. deffo wasdnt level sensor as we bridged the pins to rule it out, plus as i say put another one in there and it were reet.
