Brake dust or rust??
« on: 23 May 2009, 11:32 »
After reading another thread I checked my own wheels and found this on every one......

(I Know, I know - Im cleaning my car tomorrow - so excuse the dirty wheels!)

Is this brake dust or rust??

I need to take the wheels off at some point when I get time, to clean them properly.

If its rust, considering the car is only 10 months old, is it a warranty job??

It's rust but it's a known problem with VW hubs. If you get new hubs under warranty, same thing will happen. Best thing to do is take the wheel off (gives you a chance to clean the arches, the brakes and the alloy properly) and use some wirewool or emery cloth to clean the rust off.

Some people have painted the hubs using Hammerite silver paint which looks almost identical to the hub but won't rust.

Yep - rust. Even got this on my brand new Touareg

Most dealers would not even consider changing them under warranty, the odd one might (has been known) but rare as hen's teeth. Agree with stealthwolf - get your wheels off and paint them yourself

Yup rust. Within 6 months it was coming through. Took the wheels off, rubbed the hubs down and painted them.
Looked a damn sight better.
Didn't Phil Mc paint his hubs red?

Ive got some 00 wire wool - will this do the trick, or do I need a rougher wool?

If I get the paint and paint the hubs, how long do I have to leave it before I can put the wheel back on the car?

Is this what I need?..........

Its £6.50 in Halfords as well, so I'll get some from there if its the right stuff.....

Sorry just read that its touch dry in 30 mins - so I could put the wheel back on and do the next one etc?
Wouldnt drive the car for the rest of the day - except to back it into the garage.

Good plan?

yes, thats what I did. Just keep the paint off the part of the hub that the wheel mates too.
