overheating - yet another problem

ok, if you have read my other post iv got all the bits to fix the missfire, a good friend is showing me how to fit it etc and now onto another problem

when i drive hard for no more than 10 miles from cold the engine gets quite hot (as most would) but sometimes get the smell of burning and if i pop the hood its like opening an oven on full whack, what could be causing this overheating problem the oil temp guage is fine.

sorry i cant really be more specific still learning all this car malarke  :grin:

radiator pipes getting hot ?   coolant circulating into the top tank from the small hose ?
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

check the water pup they sometime siez up also might sound stupid but is the fan belt still attached to the engine
