Gear Linkage - Wrong part?
« on: 20 May 2009, 22:25 »
A couple of days ago I finaly got round to ordering what i thought what going to be the correct gear linkage repair kit from GSF for my car.
The ball in the picture below had worn so much that it gives me at least half an inch of forward/back play on the gear stick. I ordered part no 191-798-211S (Gear Link Rep Kit) from GSF thinking the big orange part (also pictured below) was the correct part to replace this.

Came round to fitting it today and its too large for the arm. Its too long for the actualy length of the arm(impossible to refit everything back together) and sits too loose on the arm.
Have I ordered the wrong part? If so, what do i actualy need?...If not...what am i doing wrong!!
Thanks....

As an extra... Any one know what this part is called so i can order a replacement? It comes off the top of the inlet manifold... Snapped the tube off leading back to the clocks for the MFA MPG read out...

Cheers

That orange bush goes in a different place - next to the bottom of the downpipe, where the linkage runs parallel to the floor, running towards the front of the car.  IIRC you have to undo the linkage to rip out the old one and push the new one in.

The ball bit in your pic is not included in most repair kits, you have to order it separately.
The orange thingy goes over the shaft that runs back to the gear stick. Its riveted in a metal mounting, you have to drill the rivets out and put new ones in which are in the kit. If your ball bit is shot then the original orange bit will be as well so best to change it. There's a guide in the maintenance section on how to do all this.

Thought that would be the case. It did look quite similar. Changing that wont be an issue then now that i have the parts to do so...
Any ideas what part i actually need to get rid of the play then? Ive had a look but cant quite track down what part number i need.

Hi not sure if it will be of any help to you but i used an old bit of rad hose cut it to the wright lenth and pushed it over that ball. it took the play out of the linkage on my car. i know its a bit of a bodge but it will work till you can find the wright bush

dont need to drill the rivets, it will push out and the new one will go in without doing so, just grease it up. its all in the gear linkage faq ;)
the relay shaft as said is seperate, either from vag or gsf. a mk3 ball will fit a mk2 shaft if you have a good scrappy local, the actual shaft is different though so it wont work.  tape, coolant hose or antythign else yuou can bodge round it will work as a short term fix.  'missinglinkz' in the us does various poly bushes for the linkages, inluding one for the relay shaft :)
