Under bonnet blasting

Hi All,

After speaking to the mechanic at the local trusted garage he has told me that I could do to drop my engine out and get it blasted and resprayed. I have a '91 Mk2 Gti in Capri Green.

Has anyone had any experience doing this job?   

Prices, Hints and Tips etc?

For what benefit?

Only in the most extreme cases would rust actually have an impact on the block or head, and surely if its that bad you would be better off looking for a replacement?

Personally, I would only do this as part of an engine overhaul.

Why?

Do you mean the inner wings/bulkhead or the engine itself?  Unless you're building a show car then what really is the point.  If the panels have localised rust you'd be better treating them by hand with POR15 or similar.

Ah, this makes more sense now. I bet he means get the engine bay resprayed, not the engine (as I first read it)!

I read it as painting the engine, little point in doing that to be honest.

I'm still reading it as dropping the motor and painting it.

Having seen some early 1980's Audi blocks that have gone VERY rusty I can believe it's something someone would consider, but if it was me I wouldn't bother unless you were re-building the motor and the front subframe.

Whichever thing he's looking to re-paint there's going to be a load of stuff he'll wind up replacing that he wasn't expecting - bolts and bushes that don't appreciate being disturbed.  It's one of those jobs that's going to keep on giving.

I meant the engine bay not the block itself, apologies I'd been at work since 5 am yesterday morning and was proper tired.

There is a rusty hole underneath the Air Filter Box that needs sorting, would POR15 sort this?

(This is the first project I have undertaken and I'm learning as i go)

If there is a hole, the rot needs cutting out and new metal welded back in.  That's a proper job, there after you can paint it with whatever you like, POR15 is a very good, strong paint that you can leave as is or paint over to match the body colour.  If its under the air box then surely its not an engine out job.
