what is quite suprising is the mpg range available... high teens through to 40mpg

That is easily explained....turbo addiction gives less mpg.

The R32 doesn't have the turbo to feed and so is a little more stable.

At cruising speed its a very frugal engine for what it is.  At WOT its thirsty.  This means on average its slightly above average for what it is.

Today I set the computer to instant fuel consumpion, cruising at 80 it was reading around 40-45 mpg.  Booting it of a roundabout it was reading 7 mpg

As ifti says to get good fuel economy the secret is to be gentle on the throttle.

My long term average is 26... no Hurdy, you aint getting her

You would think that... but it is quite easy to get 15-16mpg on a blast!! generally cruising along it is alot more stable though.

I have just had my first service and the overall average has jumped from 30mpg up to 33mpg which was quite surprising. On my normal run i get around 33-34mpg ,380 miles per tank ,which is mostly country A roads. On the last bank holiday i got caught behind a tractor and a caravan for 18miles sitting about 35mph and the average was showing 49mpg!  For a car with 230hp I think that this is excellent, my last car was a mini cooper and it averaged 27-28mpg.

I mainly do runs of about 20 miles at a time.

I always fill up when I get down to the last quarter. At that point Ive usually done 320 miles.
The computer tells me I have just over another 100.
Hence I think 400 miles on a tank is pretty possible.

Im going on a long run in July, so will be able to test it better then!
400 def possible as i've done it twice already but thats at a reasonable 65mph rather than getting there as fast as possible.

usually get around 330 due to short runs, and if i go for "drive" its spirited.  This around 28-29mpg

Yes.  Its a bit of a jekyl and hyde engine.  When its good its good, but when its bad ...

If you're enjoy the geeky details the explanation of how FSI works goes a long way to explain this behaviour..

While we're talking about FSI behaviour, does everyone elses standard GTI run at about 50% power until it is up to operating temperature? As if the turbo is just not "plugged in"?

Er ..... no!

Not that I condone booting it until the oil has warmed up, but there has been the odd occasion when I've need to go WOT to maintain a safe position on the road while she is still warming up, and I had full boost.

Get it checked out.
