F'in battery! please help!
« on: 19 May 2009, 13:19 »
hi all,

installed another amplifier into my mk2 yesterday and ran fine and started up fine all day, then come to it this morning and nothing... whenever i put my immobiliser fob in and turn the ignition on, the immobiliser light just comes straight on, so the immobiliser thinks its being robbed!

obviously something is draining the battery, but can it be the sound system as surely it isnt taking power unless the remote is on, which the head unit is giving power whenever i put the head unit in...

im running 1 amp at 450 watts running one sub, another amp at 600 running another sub and another amp at 100 running 6x9s, is this killing the alternator or battery??

do i need a bigger alternator?

cheers
Drew

Sounds to me like your wiring is wrong.

Edit: I have ditched what I said, I'm not getting into an ICE debate

wiring is ok and cables are all fine,

when the ignition is off the head unit stays on (dont know if every old dub does it) but if i take the face off then it cuts the remote power to the amps, so no lights are showing on the amps...

I believe all older vw's had permanent lives to the stereo.

Have you tried disconnecting the amp to make sure it's the deffinate source of the problem.

I've had probs after installing things and turned out to be something entirely different. Just coincidence it happens to go wrong at the time you've changed something.

use a multi meter and place it inbetween the live feed and the amp, and anything else you have directly connected to see if its drawing power.

you got your wireing a bit wrong me thinks.

thought there was a an ignition live for the radio,  i removed all that part of my loom tho cant check,  there are freee ignition lives on the fusebox if required tho
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

When I replaced my headunit, there was both wires there - ignition live and permanent live. I opted to use permanent live as my stereo draws no power when the face is off.
