Poor mpg and rich smell
« on: 19 May 2009, 00:03 »
Me again!

1800 kr 16v seems to love guzzling fuel.

There's excess gases coming out of the exhaust which smell rich, even when the engine is warm.

Timing and co settings are spot on.

Car runs fine (after disconnecting the wur) but can't be down to this as it does it while warm.

Just wondering what route to go down.

Can things like the fuel pump, injectors, ecu be the cause of these symptoms?

Any help appreciated.

Bjork

You've said the car is running rich and the CO is right in the same sentence - which in itself sounds a bit bizarre.

Also, when you set your CO, did you do it with the WUR attached or not. To get accurate figures, the WUR needs to be functioning properly, otherwise it will just mess up the figures.

Are you sure the car isn't just burning oil?

To properly set the CO, the fuelling needs to be right first - so you need a fuel pressure gauge and then correctly set the fuel pressure at cold/hot - but to tweak it, you need to adjust the WUR. http://clubgti.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=81658&highlight=WUR+mod

Another possibility:  Tired injectors.

Ok, I know the wur is knackered so when disconnected that doesn't help from cold but I've just replaced the air filter and what a difference!!!

Mpg shot up and no emmissions when running at temp.

12 quid fix. (But still need a decent second hand wur)

That must have been one hell of a blocked air filter !!!

PS... For future servies... You can get a decent air filter for under £5 e.g. http://www.vwspares.co.uk/g2filters.php

Cheers for the link Conker.

I was surprised to be honest.

Fuel pump sounds quieter and everything...........bonus.

Haven't a clue how long it'd been in the car though and it'd been sat in the garage for ages gathering dust while I was changing the head gasket.

Looked filthy though.
