Mk2 trying to take me on?
« on: 18 May 2009, 17:49 »
It was someone in a red GTI, MK2.

I was driving along on the inside lane, as normal, and he was in the middle lane. As I approached and overtook, he looked over and put his foot down!
This caused an automatic reaction in me, causing me to put my foot down, and almost leave him for dust - had it of not been for the traffic in front of us! I saw the smile on your face as well!!
We done this a few times, but due to the traffic we didnt get too far ;)
I then had to turn off since my turning had come up.

But seriously, a MK2 trying to take on a ED30?

On another note, how far can MK2 owners push their cars to get more ponies?

you can take the power to 400bhp+ if you fit a later 1.8t and tune that but even the standard s3 1.8t lump in a mk2 would eat your heavy mk5  Just because its old doesnt always mean it will be slow

Ha ha ha, I'd take it as a cheeky sign of respect from a fellow dubber.  I'd imagine though that a fettled mk2 would give any mk5 a run for its money.  What are the 16v's?  130-150 bhp?  Power to weight would be impressive...

So you mean put a new engine in an old car, therefore your statement is contradictive as it is no longer and 'old' car.

A 400bhp mk2 would still struggle against a mapped ED30 as the Ed30 has computer aids to keep the power flow making it easier to use, th emk2 would waste most of it by burning the tyres up.

The point is, unless you heavily modify the mk2 it doesnt stand a chance against a gti, ed30 or R32. I wouldnt waste the fuel   (the wink signifies sarcasm by the way)

Its 140 mate (that was a long time ago when it was new) will need about 200bhp to match an ED30 and a further 100 or so to be quicker than a mapped ED30

ed 30 - 0-62 mph: 6.8 seconds
mk2 16v - 0-62 mph: 7.6 seconds

Less than a second in it, depending on the type of race you may be suprised who would win :P

I don't think thats true.  400bhp fwd vs a r32 is one thing but vs a standard mk5 gti/ed30 it will muller it if the driver has a modicum of skill.  On a dry day if it got of the line cleanly it would murder a R32 as well.

wow - didnt think the MK2 could fair that well!!

This guys must have been either stock, or not as modified - since when I came up next to him, I wasnt even expecting it, but he suddenly looked across at me, checked out the car, then put his foot down!
I then put my foot down and caught him in seconds and overtook. As I slowed down again, allowing him to come up next to me, I could see him looking at the car and smiling/smirking! lol

We did it a few times and he wasnt really any competition for me at all - even if there was no traffic.

When he did put his foot down though, his car did have some grunt, which impressed me for a MK2.

well as stock they arnt much slower anyway [less than 1 second]  although many mk2s will probably be worse if they havent had good servicing.
