Yeah a lot of people space just the rear out, or the rear out more then the front to try and bring a wider look to the back with the front track width being wider as standard on the Golf 4's, front track 59.6", rear track 58.8".
Always stick with hubcentric spacers which basically means the centre hole on the spacers is the correct size for the car, in the Golf 4 case it'll be 57.1 and they should also have a lip on them like the hub does to locate the wheel.
