When taking the front  off can i do it without have a jack support the cross member?

Depends how much your'e planning on taking off really.
You can take off the bumper, grille, slam panel, front wings, radiator.........
You must not undo the small bolt between the two big bolts that hold the bumper on at each side though as that holds the front crossmember in place along with the front engine mount.

yes if you're changing bumpers but don't drive it.
