Aircon noise sorted
« on: 08 August 2004, 22:24 »
Took me pd150 to the main stealers and when i told them about the Rumbling fan noise when turning the aircon on and off they instantly knew what it was,  The aircon computer (didnt know it had one) fuse and both fans knackered.  An additional symptom i noticed was even with the engine cold and aircon off the fans were kicking in and out, apparently this is the engine in emergancy cooling mode.  This is apparently a common fault on the pd150 and is covered under the warranty or if out of warranty under the good will jesture programme so 50% of bits.  It is supposed to be a similar problem to that found on the  4 motion and again didnt know it had one.  It can also cause damage to the aircon system, the noise is the over pressurised fluid expanding violently over the heat exchanger.  Hope this helps someone, cost me 300 quid  so hope it saves someone else, cheers shagmeister

sounds like a similar problem i had. fuse blew and both fans were nackered but the noise i got was apparently the thermal cut out on the system going.

either way they fixed it although they were a bunch of nobs about it.

On my PD150, a fan noise starts & then stops on cold startup & then when the car is running (when Aircon is on) and I was wondering if this was normal.  The fans have only started to come on like this after 18 months or so of ownership?

Yup its a common prob with the pd150 apparently, and to me sounds like youve got the prob too, worth a check at the stealers, it is fully covered under the warranty.  To be honest im gettin a little tired with VW, ive had 2 oil pipe/breathers go, and the fans popped just out of warranty, my mate with his 150 gti mk 4 bought the same time, he has had 3 trips throu coil packs and a full front end respray coz the paint was peeling off and another mates with normal td has had 2 cam belt tensioners in 30 thou miles, not the best showing for a highly regarded mark of car

I just want to clarify this as I have an air-con problem which sounds like it may be the same problem.  Basically I get an occasional whirring sound from the bonnet when the aircon is on, a bit like something metallic whirring and rubbing.  Sometimes it can be bloody loud.  The aircon still works, although it struggles when idling in traffic on a hot day.  I have no problems when the air-con is off.

Has anyone had this symptom?

The actual air con components are the same regardless of whether you have a manual air con or climatronic system. It's just the control of the air flow inside the car that is different between the two system. Therefore yes, the compressor clutch problem can occur on either system.

"NIMROD"

If the noise you are referring to sounds like a fan funning on and rubbing when the aircon is turned off could be the same, i think one way of telling is to pop the battery cover off and check the fuses under there, i believe a blown fuse here is also an indicator.  The fans running when the engine is cold as well.  Hope this helps ta shagmeister
