I'm a die hard manual driver, but took the 'risk' of buying a DGS car as I knew I had to spend more than a few hours getting used to its characteristics.
I've had my car for just over 5 weeks now and I'm still not fully acclimatised!
At first I thought I'd made a big mistake;
When in D mode, the box wanted to change up into 6th at practically any speed, so when I wanted to accelerate I'd be in completely the wrong gear and I'd have to use kickdown which was usually more acceleration than I actually wanted, so I'd lift off and it would immediately change up!
When in S mode the car refused to change gear, so on slowish roundabouts I'd be sitting at 5-6k rpm tootling round - must've looked like an idiot!
I was just about to give up when I thought I'd give manual mode (via then paddles) a go - aha, that's what all the fuss is about! So much better, holds the gear for you, but still drops down when you brake so you're pretty much always in the right gear, but crucially, YOU decide when you want it to change up. Gear changes seem quicker too.
Still getting used to the rather small paddles, but they do fall to hand if you drive at 1/4 to 3 position on the wheel.
I'm still learning its capabilities, but the more I get used to it, the more I like it.
HTH.
