Mine was the same, the wire into the back of the switch was loose.

However, if its lit dimly when the hazards aren't on - then its because the main indicator fuse has blown. Go check that your indicators actually work on their own (the hazard switch is a seperate circuit).

On my 90 spec Golf I had the same problem. Fixed the hazards with a new switch (stalk assembly) but also had a problem with the indicators. That needed a new fusebox

probably not the hazard relay as it also does the indicators, so its probably the hazard switch.

ah sorry i missed the switch change part!
check you get 12v to pin 15 with ign on, and 12v to pin 30 at all times.  check for continuity between pin 31 and ground too.

OK, this isn't an answer but might throw some light on the problem....and I have not replaced anything yet.

My 8v has exactly the same sypmtoms as yours...........but........with ignition on.......turn on hazards.......nothing but green light in dash (indicators are all fine BTW). With hazard switch still on, turn on indicators (left or right) and the hazards come on with the red light in the switch??? turn off indicators and the hazards stay on fine. Kept doing it a few times and then the hazards worked OK off the switch by themselves??

With ignition off, turn hazard switch on = squat. But after doing the above a few times hazards now work fine with the ignition on or off (for the time being)..........WTF ?  :undecided:

thats an odd one, id go with a new hazard switch in your case :)
maybe check the red/yel wire to pin 30 for permanaent 12v.  I wonder if you have a previous alarm install thats playin silly buggers?
