mk2 G reg GTI power steering box issues! please help

Hi all,

I'm new here today!!

Although not my first Golf mk2 (g reg 1.8 gti)  This is the first time I have had a problem that I dont' know about!
I recently bought her not for looks but for how sweet the engine and drive is, I noticed pwr steering fluid around the reservoir so thought there must have been a leak.  I have run around now for a week and the pwr steering pump has just started to make a noise and sth steering a bit notchy when turn lock right when driving slow.And has blown fluid back out from the reservoir!! Has anyone else had this happen etc..?
My q's are 
I have been told to drain all the fluid including the rack! whats the best way to do this??
I am about to order a new pump as G&S  rekon the seals will have gone and that the RED fluid isn't the correct grade!! Hence needing to drain the rack.
Thanks for your time  any advice would be great.

You can drain the rack by undoing the hoses and turning it lock to lock.

If you steering is notchy and you fluid is brown - it sounds like the pump ran dry and ate some seals.

the mk2 is supposed to run dexron II atf which is red, says so on the reservoir. though there is no telling what the old stuff is.  Its thicker than the green stuff so if anything green fluid will cause leaks.
If you let the level get too low the pump starts to get air in and ends up blowing the fluid out of the tank, I've been there!

I wouldnt get a new pump just yet though, look over the entire system to make sure there arnt any other leaks you didint know about, if it looks good try it with new fluid and give it a bleed (turn from lock to lock, make sure to keep fluid to max at all times)
