Speed : Just to give me an idea
« on: 11 May 2009, 21:57 »
Id just like too put my Golf 8v up against an average golf speed wise and see how its running.
So id like too basically know how fast it should do in each gear? Im not talking about top end speeds im thinking more off of the line.
Also it has done 133k miles. Ive never had an older car and im worried about letting it rev out to 6k. I could do it all day long with my punto gt and fiesta zetec-s but im a little worried about taking my GTI to the limit. Will it damage an old engine.
Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,

Get it rolling road tuned and dyno tested by someone who knows what they're doing.

Power output and torque are alot more important and if its down on power they should be able to tell you why and perhaps help fix it.

If the engine is strong and running well, alot of golfs are a little up on power for being modified, you'll come away with a smile and you'll know where the engines peak power is and how hard you can push it.

Shouldn't cost much more than £80.

i shouldnt worry, my mk2 gti has nearly 250k on the clock and i often rag the crap blow the cobwebs out of it (when warm) and its fine

I don't think a semi will give the same results

its my 3rd gear that feels most powerful. Previously in cars ive had it has seemed too be 2nd. Having said this my polo 16v was the same. Both excellent looked after examples aswell. Im sure its fine i just wanted too check what it should be doing in each gear :)
Thanks
Chris

gti  engines  are desinged to have an italian tune up daily,   some like mine need constant tuneing in this way
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Mine has a bit of a 'kick' somewere high up the range (don't know where as my rev counter doesn't work, but I would guess it would be about 5000rpm as max power output is at 5300rpm). After this, it tends to get a bit flat, and you can feel you need to change up. You'll know when it happens

Happens at approx 40-50mph in second and 60-70mph in 3rd.

'Will it damage an old engine' will depend on what condition it's in, how well it's been maintained and how well it runs, amongst other things.

you can't really damage an 8 valve by reving it , the power falls off so you chane gear long before you get near the sort of rpms that will do damage
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Dont be a fanny. 8v's should wheel spin in 3rd. My old 8v used to anyway and that had 120k on it.

Treat it nice and drive it hard, "Motto" should work every time.
