High Mileage???
« on: 11 May 2009, 14:51 »
Hi as said in my intro, i am new to the VW scene and lookin into buying my 1st mk3 golf 8 or 16v

I have noticed nearly every golf i see has well over 100k on the clock, is that normal?

How long does the average engine go on for and wat to look for when buying one with high mileage?

Thanks

Ryan

Mines on 145k and still going strong!

These engines will go up to 200k easily
Mystic Blue Mk3 16v + Black Mk5 Gti 05 plate + Peugeot 405 Mi16

Important thing there is "these engines". At the end of the day if the shell is good, why wouldnt it last for ever? if you looked after it and undersealed it etc etc. When the engine goes pop stick something else in. Its all down to dedication i suppose.

I got an 8v 2 years ago, was my 3rd car. First VW. Loved it to bits, not the fastest bit of kit but good car. Got a late one with all the extras, and the same larger VR6 brakes etc. Now nearly 3 years down the line i have the car as i want it bodywise. And thinkin about sticking a VR6 into it, simple swap over and expands it to a whole new level of modding/wasting money.

Everyone is different, and needs/wants a different car. What are you buying a mk3 gti for? Speed? Comfort? Day to day family use with some traffic light fun?

100k is nothing really, I had a lowish mileage one and had lots of problems due to the low use.

I would pick an 8v, much smoother
