Fitting new engine question for the pro's out there

Just out of curiosity, in a 1.8 Mk3 Golf CL chassis, what other engines would potentially fit in there? Like would a 2L GTI engine fit in without me needing to modify the chassis?

Or is there any other types of engines from other cars that would fit?

I've heard of Corsa owners fitting Cavalier engines into their cars...

if you get the subframe for a vr6 that goes straight in no problem, get the bigger brakes aswell then

any 4 cyl  vag group engine will fit,    allong with the v5 and vr6 and all of its derivatives

some of these engines will take more effort to fit than others tho

mk3 8v 16v VR6

Mk4 1.8t V6 R32

But as said, each will take more effort depending.

Would would also need as well as engine and gearbox, the brakes, rear discs etc etc. Fuel pumps, ecu etccccc

The mk3 conversions would be easier to bolt on. The mk4 ones are trickier.

So on a standard CL, if I were to put a Mk3 GTI engine in there, I'd also need a gearbox from a GTI aswell? I take it this is because AFAIK, some GTI engines are 6 speed and my standard CL is only a 5 speed? Am I thinking along the right lines?

depends what engine the cl has, your existing box may fit. MK3 gtis never had 6 speed box, all 5 speed

just buy either a GTi or VR6.  The cars are cheap enough that theres no point converting a lower spec car.

AFAIK, and I'll have to confirm this if I do into overhauling the engine further, mine is either engine code AAM or ANN. Bogstandard 1.8 engine, 5 speed, bought as a "doing up" project for a decent price.

Would the gearbox from this work alongside a 2.0 16V GTI engine if I did want to do an overhaul?

Obviously, I'll first start looking at replacing suspension, brakes, exhaust, air filter, wheels etc with decent parts and finish the cosmetic side of the car (it's just begun a paint job) before I invest any serious money into the engine, but any info you guys have on converting a standard CL to a GTI engine is very helpful and much appreicated :-)

 abf's make short work of 020 boxes if you drive it like you should, thats why the abf and vr6 got o2a boxes from factory
