That doesnt look right?
« on: 09 May 2009, 18:34 »
Hi there,

Firstly, on pressing and depressing the clutch, i can hear a clear creaking sound, when the car is stationary, and when i drive although i cant hear the noise i can feel something that would indicate it is making the noise through the pedal! (hope i explained that well enough)

Been like that for few weeks at least, recently also noticed when i pull away, i can hear a creaking / light knocking sound that sounds like its coming from the near side front somewhere. Well its got louder and i looked under the bonnet today and saw this::

Its at the near side front of the car, reasonably far back in the bay.

To me that looks like a gearbox mount???

It definitely doesn't look right?

Any one know whats up???

The car is a 96 16v gti btw.

Thanks Guys

Yes it is the gearbox mount, you should be able get a new one from gsf or euro car parts.

Yep he is defo right i had same prob the pedel would creak and it would get abit sticky exactly same faults as u described but my front engine mount was gone, everytime id change gear the engine would move to much i knew there was something wrong so when i replaced the clutch i also replaced the clutch cable front engine mount and the clutch release bearing and the green cap that covers it. & when you do replace the cable make sure u get some new clips that hold the cable on to the rod to the gearbox this moves up or down when u press the pedel & because i didnt replace that clip it broke yesterday the clutch pedel goes all the way down and u cant get it out of gear i had to pull it out of gear but the worse was to come. me and my cousine got the clips back on but after few yards of driving it, it made a loud bang i pulled it out of gear and parked up went to look for the clip saw a clutch release bearing and gear box oil  OMG i thought i broke my gear box, called aa they came out and he replaced the clip with a new1 and luckly there was no damage to the gear box so i warn you please replace it or you wont be a happy chappy. I went to the garage and replace that bearing as some joey ran over it. this clip is under the rod that connects to the gearbox it consists of a rubber and 2 metal clips i think, make sure u get all 3 one of them slides in to hold the cable.

so are we saying that as a result of too much gearbox movement, its damaged the cable and thats what i can hear when i depress the pedal and the other creaking sound on pulling away is probably the mount?

No they are seperate issues. Both are common problems. The clutch cable noise you hear is the cable scraping against the sleave where it has worn down, very common on VWs of these era's

okay so the gearbox mount might cause some of the creaking i can hear from the nearside front. However, i have just realised that the 16v's dont have a cable, theyre hydraulic!! So what the hell is the creaky clutch pedal noise then/!?!?

Cheers

It will be the pedal at a guess. WD40 ftw. If not then the clutch bearing.

no i had the same problem with my clutch, when i replaced my gearbox i put some grease where the slave cylinder comes into contact with the relese bearing, just unbolt it and put some copper grease on the end. i had a broken engine mount aswell got that replaced but it has made the other ones weaker so i need to do those aswell.
