how easy to change an exhaust???

hi guys, at present I have a really crappy looking exhaust, so poor it even has the word 'powerful' around the end of it!!!
Its a 1997 16V GTI.
But also, there is now a huge rust hole near the rear wheel, just after the large backbox area, which is obviously causing it to blow, can anyone tell me how easy it is to replace an exhaust without having to go to the garage to get it done, and also, can anyone link some good exhausts that are on e bay please?
I ask so many questions as this is the first car where I actually have to do things myself rather than take it to the garage and pay through the nose for it...

So what exactly do you need to replace? Just the back box?
Doubt if its Powerflow as wouldnt have thought they would rust!

If just a backbox then its easy but also replace the rubber mounts!

as above mate, nice easy job if its only the backbox  :smiley:
full system is a little more difficult when your working on your back under the car on axle stands  :sad:

there is teh exhaust, then the large area, and then the pipe going towards the front of the car, that is the part with a great wopping hole in it, if any one can reccomend a good twin exhaust to replace it and also a simple walkthrough guide on how to replace it I would be eternally grateful. :wink: :cool:

are you after a standard replacement or stainless exhaust?

not too bothered really, just want to make it safe in the first instance, although the stainless ones do look pretty nice on some of the pictures from guys here. what sort of cost do you imagine?

Its not an easy job to replace an exhaust at home. The reason being all the fixing are usually totally rotten, so prove a real pain to remove.
Garages don't usually charge a lot to remove/fit one.

A good stainless Is about £300/£400 but will last a life time :smiley:
Don't know how much standard would be.
Have a look at GSF and euro car parts
