drivers electric window not working?
« on: 06 May 2009, 06:49 »
hi just recently my drivers side electric window has stopped working. when i press the switch a slight noise is heard but nothing happens. also the drivers side switch doesn't let down the passenger window but the passenger switch does work. wondered if its either the switch, motor or regulator? gonna get the door card off this weekend and have a better look but wondered if this is a common fault? any idea's would be great?

Hi there,  I've got the same problem here..must be the time of year or something
I'm yet to tackle mine but another chap on here says remove the window regulator and check for detached cables etc..

Electric windows are notorious on mk3's.

Happened when I bought my car.

You'll need a new motor regulator thing.  Think the dealer charges an arm and a leg for them.

Best thing to do is buy one second hand.  Then you'll get one already fitted onto the runners.  Fitting them isn't so bad once you figure out what to do.

Should pick a second hand one for £50 max.

I've a brand new mechanism in the bedroom back home that I bought from GSF thinking it came with a motor, it didn't.  If you need it, I'll sell you it.

Your driver's switch not letting the passenger side down may be a different problem.  Not sure tho.  I'm sure a new switch won't cost too much.  Ideal thing would be find someone breaking a golf.  Get them to send both items together.

My mk3 cab has a sort of similar problem, the drivers side works sometimes, but more often than not it doesn't work. However the passenger window switch on the drivers side does work the passenger window.

The motor must be fine as when I hold the key in the unlock position, the window goes down fine and returns on the key too.

I did start looking at it but drew a blank, if you find out a switch sorts it let me know.

I read on here not long ago that if you open the door and peel back the plastic housing where the hinges are (on the door side it meets the big black nut that goes into the door, where all the wires run through) you'll find wires that are in bad condition, all you need to do is reconnect the wires. Dont undo the black nut, just peel back the plastic that joins it! I've got the same intermittent fault just hav'nt got round to fixing it yet! I dont know the technical names for the bits but I hope this give's you a good enough picture on how to do it! good luck, let me know whether it work's or not.

As above, it's definitely worth checking the wires between door and body before you start replacing anything. You can just pull back the rubber covering and there'll probably be some wires broken or deteriorated. The thick brown wire is the earth if I remember correctly.

I had problems with electric windows working intermittently and other strange faults and after going round all the doors and reconnecting various wires and taping over any bare wires all was fine again. You can twist off the connector on the body side but it's a b!tch to get back on again without removing all the panels inside to get to the other side of the connector to put some pressure on it when trying to reconnect it as it just pushes back inside the bodywork.

At the end of the day it's easy to do, costs nothing, and if it fixes your problem you're laughing.

These friggin lectric windows!! Grrrrrr!  now my rear drivers side has gone south!
Got the thing washed and tire pressures checked before off to the coast yesterday, then noticed the rear window was down an inch..tried to close it on the button and it just fell into the bottom of the door!
Can hear the motor runing on the up and down but no window action! lol
Doesn't it just make you question whether you really want ownership of these cars..
