Engine size confusion
« on: 03 May 2009, 21:08 »
I recently went to look at a 1992 Passat GL. It was advertised as a 2.0 8v. When I went to see it the engine sure looked, pulled and sounded like an 8v. Doing a reg check on the car though it looks like it's registered as a 1.8 GL, but with engine capacity listed as 1984cc  Here's a link to a site:

I didn't think of checking the engine code while there since I thought it was a 2.0. GL spec Passats were meant to have 2.0 8v engines too, it was the CL spec that had the 1.8.
Any ideas on this one? Does it sound dodgy or could it be a mistake on the paperwork?
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

Strange, maybe it has had an engine change.

I wouldn't get too bent out of shape about it - is it straight, does it run right, would you be happy driving it?

If the answer to all those questions is yes then crack on, because at that age it wants to be scrapper money and if it's a 2.0 then it should serve you well.

Even VW make mistakes - I've heard of 1.8s with 1.6 stamped on the side of the block vice versa and all sorts of other wierd things, all out the box.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
