VIN Number question...
« on: 03 May 2009, 20:00 »
I'm looking at buying an import GTI.  It was registered Feb 07.  The car came from a Dubai dealer that did the PDI in Dec 06.  The VIN number confirms that it is an 06 model, but is there any way to tell exactly when it was made?  i.e. which month.  I just want to try and check that it hasnt been sitting around for ages, although it does seem in good condition.

I heard that an 06 model could have actually been manufactured as early as August 05.  Is this true?

Cheers

Yes it's true.

You do realise that the car ill have no warranty left?

Personally I would walk away from that car but it's your money.

Yup realise about the warranty.  The dealer is including a 12 month 3rd party warranty.

Make sure you read and fully digest the warranty being offered as most them exclude cover break down due to failure of wear and tear items.

Yup will do.

Any one know about the VIN number, can you pinpoint the manufacturing date more accurately than just the year?

Is anybody here able to help with checking a VIN number for the build date?  Will try my local dealer but from past experience I don't hold out much hope.  Also I'm supposed to be collecting the car on Wednesday so could do with knowing ASAP.

Cheers in advance.

There was a UK website to do this but it seems to have gone out of service when I tried it earlier today.

Thanks but does the VIN give the exact build date or just the model year?  I basically need to find out exactly when it was built so that I know how long it was sitting around for before being imported.  Currently could be anywhere from August 05 to December 06 when it had its PDI.  If it's towards the latter part of 06 then I'm happy.

If you put the reg number and make into the DVLA vehicle enquiry website it will give you the year of manufacture if that helps?
