New S Tronic Details....
« on: 02 May 2009, 22:51 »
Hi...

Found this on another site, makes go reading...

I have just found this item on another forum which indicates an increase in the power than the S-tronic will be able to handle, especially in cars with longitudinal engines

"Audi is preparing a new version of its S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox with the ability to drive more power to the wheels and also work with longitudinally mounted engines. The gearbox is expected to first show up in the upcoming Q5 SUV, but will eventually make its way to the A4 and A5.

One of the primary limitations of the old gearbox was the inability to handle torque figures higher than 320Nm, however this has been boosted to 550Nm in the new model. This means we’re likely to see more performance models with dual-clutch shifting. At the moment Audi is forced to use a CVT transmission in the A5 3.2L FSI and the S5 tiptronic models because the engines develop 330Nm and 440Nm respectively. The current RS4 develops 430Nm so even with a generous boost for the new generation model, it’s likely Audi will be able to offer dual-clutch as an option and make it below the 550Nm cutoff.

Previous owners of Audi and VW dual-clutch gearboxes were limited to six gears, however the new model will get one more. Both automatic and manual shift modes will be available for drivers.

The gearbox is also likely to be mated to the new quattro AWD system with sport differential.

Audi is expected to completely replace standard automatic or CVT gearboxes with dual-clutch ‘boxes on all but a few models such as their Q7 SUV and A8 limo due to higher torque figures."

xxx I wonder if the Mk6 Golf GTi Is to get this box xxx

doesn't the Nissan R35 GTR have a DSG type gearbox and churns out 580nm of torque?

It sure does, but it is also proving to be more fragile than VW's DSG's.

Might be something for the Mk7, I doubt it for the mk6 though.

All IMHO, of course ;)

Isn't this already in use on the new Audi S4? And maybe even the Passat R36??

Yes...

This box is only available for the Quattro models...

See Here..

So far, Audi has only offered its twin-clutch transmissions on its smaller, transverse-engined cars (remember the world’s first, the TT back in 2003?). That gearbox comes in two forms: a seven-speeder, dry-clutch affair for engines rated up to 184lb ft, and a six-speed, wet-clutch one for models rated up to 258lb ft.

Now with the launch of this seven-speeder, the same technology is available on bigger quattro models whose engines are mounted longitudinally. It’s a new wet-clutch application designed entirely inhouse by Audi and can be fitted to most of the company’s larger cars.

....I'm....erm....being given a new S4 to play with for a week very soon. Supercharged V6 with 7-speed DSG etc - I'll naturally be writing and posting a review after I've given her back.

[Don't ask! I'd have to shoot you afterwards if I told you]

Guess what! There's a problem with its S-tronic! Delayed a week while it's fixed.
