If I cut a coil, would that not cause problems? It would be the cheapest option!

Elaborate please? :)

The original suspension that came with the jetta had cut coils on the front and I could hear them rattling about at times!

You've pretty much answered your own question with that statement.

Cut springs will fall out of the cup eventually, they will also void your insurance, f**k your dampers, and generally make the car handle like a bag of crap in comparison to spending a bit of money on some decent springs.

by cutting coils you take preload off the springs.  so say if you find a nice hump back bridge and get some air,  suspention goes to limute of travel springs arnt under any load so pop off and you has nasty suprise when land, often results in car diveing into the hedge
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Ouch.. Not good!!

I've just done some more searching online and can't find a single place that sells front springs seperately! :(

Best place to get some new springs would be venom motorsport, they do all kinds of different springs and shock kits at very good prices,
they normally have a big ad in the golf mags or just go to http://www.venommotorsport.com they will be able to sort you out for sure.

i had the h+r cup kit on my mk1 golf, it was very good.
i was looking at the mk2 kit but darren at g-werks said dont bother as the front always seems to sit at a funny height. a shame, because its a good kit
