Hi all, I'm new on here and have read a good few pages on the site.  I understand that there seems to be a few causes for this though.

Only had the car a week and the first couple of runs were fine, I live about 15 miles from town but last owner really only drove it round town.

It seems to be after a trip into or from town (today both!!)  the car will say be doing 60 Mph quite the thing and then just die, electrics still on, rev counter falls to zero instantly and i roll to a halt.  naturally the battery and oil light come on. pas and breaks are a bugger though.
Today it happened just as i reached the town center, managed to roll into a parking slot and 2 min later and i was off again. It won't start the first few times if i try and re start straight away. Sometimes if i'm lucky it will die and then bump start back up again and carry on but mostly does it in dangerous places like half way up a hill on a bend!! Wouldn't start at all on the hill till i rolled it back to a flat junction.  Anyway any ideas welcome, had a mate check over today, cleaned HT contacts, looks like ht leads, coil all quite new.  When it's running it runs fine. I'm not that car tech minded but know the basics.  I hear it could be crank sensor but also told it wouldn't run then. fuel pump ok.  Heard about air intake rubber hoses could be blocked, where are these?  sorry for long post.

Love the car BTW,

Toby

Thanks for that,
Had a look and it seems like it could be a good few reasons for it conking out.
Have seen that relay #30 can be a problem, just looked for mine and it is the old black one.  Seeems like that seems to have cured a good few with the same problem.
Hope it's not the crank sensor as that looks a pain to get at.  Would that cause an intermitent problem though? Got to go pick up the OH later on so we'll se how it goes today.

Just to say, Managed to get hold of a new relay and guess what!!!

That's one elimination down.

I'm supposed to be doing a 800 mile round trip end of next week and I just can't see it happening if the car is like this.
I've read just about all of the posts on this but surly someone has figured out a way to diagnose this fault.
Only happening to me when the engine has been running about 20 - 30 min.
Relay clicks and get's warm.

Any other help please.

Hi Again guys,
Had a quick chat with my normal mechanic / garage.  He seems to think that VAG-COM won't show anything if i have no engine management light showing up on the dash.  IS THIS USUAL or have some peeps got a fault without the light coming on??  He hasn't experienced the fault but thought i may have to replace the whole distributor !!! thoughts please.

Thanks

Toby.
