which mk11 GTI?
« on: 29 April 2009, 14:46 »
this question has probably been asked to death on this forum but i'm new and seeking some advice before buying so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which golf GTI MK11 should i buy?
8V or 16V? Early or late?

basically i want the car to be quick as possible both acceleration and top end. The car will mainly be driven by myself but sometime by my girlfriend so power steering would be nice as long as the added weight doesn't take away any noticeable performance. the insurance is not really an issue as i have had quotes for both 8V and 16V add there wasn't a massive difference. I'm looking to spend around £3000 if that makes any difference.

thanks again any help is really appreciated.

Welcome!

Not sure about whether to get early or late but here is an epic 57 page thread on the 8V vs 16V! Happy reading!

£3K eh? You'll be wanting an Oak green big bumper 3dr valver with that kind of cash, although if speeds your thing maybe look into G60's. They're all LHD but that might keep your girlfriend out of the drivers seat which may or may not be a bad thing!

for the cash 90's spec will be no probs (power steering, leccy windows etc) but i would go g60 if you can afford but you need a fat wallet for running costs!

TBH... up the budget a little and get a mk2 20vT....

Runs rings around anything else.... or even a tidy mk2 vr6 for 3k

TBH buying something like a MKII with a 20vT or VR6 conversion is risky bizz. So many are slung together and then ragged they become unreliable and you end up spending a fortune fixing other peoples bodges/short cuts.

£3K is a lot of money (well it is to me anyway) and if I was spending that much on a MKII I'd be looing for something standard in excellent totally un molested condition.

If I wanted a MKII VR or 20vT and I had the money I'd build my own so I know it was done right or at least the bodges/shortcuts would be mine and I's know where they are!

CHEERS KEEP IT COMING!

i really wanna go for the 16v.

suppose the question now is, whether there are any performance differences between the newer and older models due to the extras such as power steering and electric windows. if so is it noticeable?

The extras make little to no difference. I'd say go for one with PAS as the steering rack is a little quicker (less turns lock to lock) than the manual rack which I've always found too slow in MKII's.
