I've got a 90BHP 1.9 TDi MK3 and I'm pretty impressed with it. If it had 130BHP I'd regard it as something worth keeping.

I've had a good look round at the various VAG models with the 1.9 TDi and see that the Mk4 Golfs got 100,110,130 and 150BHP versions. Along those lines anyway.

What is the difference? Is it turbo boost level? Injector size? Intercooler? Internals?

I did a google search and it looks like a chip swap can turn 90BHP into 115BHP. Are these numbers realistic or marketing bull sh!t?

Are the higher powered versions based on the same block and head?

I had a quick read of this:
http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/tuningmethods_plus.shtml

Seems to suggest that injectors, mapping for more fuel and intercooler improvements are the way to go.

Be wary of fitting a chip or tuning module - i spoke to my local VW specialist and he said he would fit anything for free for me, but that i'd be back in 6 months wit a broken flywheel. He pointed to a standard 150bhp car he had in bits, so even VW don't get it right all the time.

Mine is still pretty punchy after 143k miles so i'm not bothering, just not worth  the risk.

you want to get bigger injector nozzles first. look at audi's passats and t4 vans. however anything over 130 bhp will smoke like hell and eat clutches unless you get it upgraded.

however that engine can and has been tuned to 190 brake! after injectors look at induction to match the extra fuel levels. then a big intercooler and turn the turrbo boost up / remap and your laughing and should see you wasting mk3 gti's for breakfast if your that way inclined

The 90 and 110 are not that different, the 130 and 150 are however PD lumps and will take major work to fit to a mk3.

Aye i'm not bothered bout the PD engine as it's too much work - will just buy a mk4 when i want one of those :P

But the AHU that I have, I had a chat to 'diesel bob' about some stage 1 injectors, they sound alright, give up to 25bhp he says. Is this the first thing I should be doing in terms of performance upgrades?  I already have a K&N panel filter and intend to cut a section out of the airbox to increase airflow.

The other thing i'd like to know is where to get uprated intercoolers and turbo's....

Thanks!

i would say maybe a frontera front mont cooler from a GSI...as for turbo, what ever fits to the manifold unless you gave a new flange welded but thats risky for the manifold, unless you get a new manifold made (which IMO is not really worth it unless you go for stupid power)

incidently, i had made a similar thread asking pretty similar questions yesturday :) (which wayne really helped out in :))

sorry but, which intercooler can I use?  does it have the same diameter top/bottom hose?  It's just a case of mounting it?

Thanks

My engine is staying standard for a while.
I like the sound of scrap yard tuning.
I'll take a look at the intercooler when I'm bored some time.

Larger injectors is the first step according Diesel bob. However, I don't really want to be seeing black smoke. The engine doesn't smoke at all in the current set up.

Regarding the gearbox and flywheel. What bits can I fit in place to what I already have?
Will a gearbox and flywheel off a 110 engine fit then?
