Should I remove the chip?
« on: 26 April 2009, 23:39 »
I've looked through a lot of past posts on the subject of Digi ECU chipping, and it looks like people are still undecided on whether ECU chips are worth it or not.

When I bought the car, the guy handed me a chip, saying that he had got it with the car. He assumed it was the original ECU chip, and said that the car must have been chipped by the previous owner, though he also added that it felt no different to a 'normal' GTI.

When I drive it, it seems pretty smooth and responsive, it pulls well in all gears and is pretty quick, but I don't seem to get the same pushed-back-into-your-seat acceleration force I remember from my dad's old Golf Mk2 GTI 8v, and I've noticed that it doesn't seem to really be accelerating much faster than most other cars (and vans/4x4s/MPVs) on the road.

I've read rubjohnny's tuning guide with interest, and am now torn between leaving it with the mod chip in, or putting the original chip in and tuning as per the guide.

I guess for those with badly tuned Digis, a mod chip would make a lot of difference - most of the recommendations for mod chips came from those down on power, or experiencing digi-lag.

It would be interesting to hear from those who have tried both a mod chip, and have tried rub johnny's tuning set up on the standard chip, to compare the results, and to understand which might be better..

You can't use the chip as a way to get around poor tuning
Get the car tuned up properly, you'll notice the difference big time! :)

afaik the chips just tell the ecu to throw more fuel into the engine, not an ideal solution!

Get the car tuned up properly
Try it with the normal chip, then try it with the mod chip and see which you prefer

proper chips don't just tell the ecu to throw more fuel in,    thats offset tuneing aka botching and is ghey there is no excuse for that on digi 2  as it's easy as hell to do it properly.

the chip dosent just contain the fuel maps ( spark map cannot be alterd on digifant 2 )  but code for the ecu as well on the better chips there are differances here as well. the problem with tuneing and digi 2 is that at about 70 % power  the afm  is fully open and it's  running off it's internal settings  this seems to be where you can inprove things on a tuned digi 2 motor.  also with most digi chips  the dizzy timeing should be a littel diffrent
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Anyone done it?

Read the thread  Lots of people did, and reaped the benefits.

If it goes tits up - its not exactly impossible to revert, is it.

I know, I've read it numerous times before!

Just wondered if anyone on here had done it that's all.

I think I've made my mind up - I'm going to take out the chip, and tune it properly. I've read about the AFM trick, and while I'm sure it works, I think that for some people, it is still covering up a bad tuning setup.

I drove the car again earlier, looking out for 'Digilag' and I think there is a bit of a hesitation to get going. It pulls away okay (to be fair I'm used to a 1.4 Pug 306), but it takes about 1/2 second after putting my foot down until it really picks up.

I've got a few other jobs to do first - I'm replacing the thermostat and flushing the cooling system as it's running a bit cool at the moment. Once this is done, I'll swap the chips over (watching I don't blow the ECU!) and try my hand at tuning!
