Clocks........again.
« on: 26 April 2009, 07:44 »
Hi, I put a new oil temp sender in last night and while waiting for the car to warm up to see if the MAF would register I noticed that the speedo is a motometer (140) and the revcounter is VDO. Now I know the clocks were changed since the last mot as the mileage is now reading 25k low but I presumed the whole lot had been changed, now I'm thinking it was just the speedo. I spent a lovely 1/2 hour or so reading through all the search stuff yesterday, very good info but would a Jan 91 8v have had 140 clocks as original (VDO I presume or were they mixed from the factory)? I'm just wondering if I need to check the speedo drive thingy in the gearbox  :undecided: I haven't noticed the mph being way out on those 30 mph 'light up' signs. (BTW oil temp works fine now).

They could have either make, sound like the speedo part of cluster has been changed at some point which would explain the differential, 140 mph clock should have a white drive gear going into the gearbox, 120/160 mph should have red drive grive going into the box.

The flip side could be that the speedo clock could be original and the other half of the cluster was changed due to a faulty MFA, but certainly never a mix/match from the factory it's either one make or the other.

PS. The VDO clusters are the better badge they seem to have less issues on the cars I have come across.

the white/red/green speedo gears have nothing to do with the speedo, its down to the ring & pinion gear used in the gearbox :)

So I should be OK so long as the original clocks were 140? Think I'd best get the wife to follow me in hers to just make sure mines not too far out.

should be ok regardless, as long as a  previous owner didnt believe the old 'change the gear if your speedo is 140mph' myth
if the speedo is out check the gearbox code and compare it to http://www.scirocco.org/gears, to check what final drive you have.  Then compare this to the list on brokes site (under ring & pinion gear) http://www.brokevw.com/020ratios.html then last of all whip speedo cable out of gearbox to check your gear colour matches.  Be careful when removing the cable, last thing you want is to drop the gear into the box!
