Advice on GTI clipper.
« on: 23 April 2009, 14:32 »
Hi
Please excuse my ignorance. Over the coming months this will hopefully change. I am looking at buying a GTI clipper but need a bit of advice. I have seen a car which has 150k milage. The rest of the car looks in really good nick with lots of ongoing maintenance but I am concerned with the milage. Should I be concerned with this high milage. It will be my daily drive but I don't cover more than 6k a year. I know VW's are solid as rock but how far can these engines go? Any advice would be appreciated.
Once again please excuse my ignorance!!
Regards
Tintin

my mk2 gti got to 170k on the original engine, and it still had plenty of life left in it. the clutch and gearbox were both toast though.  They can last forever or die young, all depends whow well it has been looked after. main thing is how does the clutch feel, does the gearbox crunch and does it smoke when cold/hot/when you floor it/on overrun. that and rust, rust and rust!  get underneath, feel round the inner arches especially at the back, look at the beam mounting points, windscreen in the corners, inner chasiss legs etc etc

My cabby has done 130k and starts first time every time. Worst mechanical issue I have had engine wise is a perished hose for the radiator. The fact it has got to 150 points to it being serviced so should be ok. Just make sure you give it a comprehensive service and it should be ok.
